Our Power Transmission Lines And Substation Case
With rapid economic growth and increasing energy demand in the South Asian region, cross-border electricity trade is considered a key strategy to ensure energy security and support sustainable development. Against this backdrop, the governments of India and Nepal jointly decided to construct a High-Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission line to facilitate electricity exchange between the two countries, enhance regional grid stability, and promote the utilization of renewable energy sources.
Project Name: South Asia High-Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) Transmission Project
Location: China-Pakistan
Duration: 2014 to 2016
Key Stakeholders: Ministry of Power, India; Nepal Electricity Authority; Silverstone Electric (EPC Contractor)
Project Scale: 800kV HVDC transmission line, total length of 500 kilometers
Investment: Approximately $1 billion
Improve the interconnectivity and reliability of the electricity systems in both countries.
Facilitate renewable energy trade, particularly hydropower, between China and Pakistan.
Lay the foundation for the development of the regional electricity market and support energy integration in the South Asian region.
Preliminary Research and Feasibility Analysis: Comprehensive assessment of the route alignment, environmental impacts, and socio-economic benefits.
Design and Planning: Deployment of the latest HVDC technology for designing the transmission line to ensure efficient and low-loss power transmission.
Approval and Permit Acquisition: Close collaboration with government departments, local authorities, and environmental organizations in both countries to ensure smooth project progression.
Construction and Development: Silverstone Electric, as the EPC contractor, undertook the construction work, including material procurement, equipment installation, and testing.
Testing and Commissioning: Conducted comprehensive system testing to ensure the safe and reliable operation of the transmission line.
The project, the first large-scale HVDC transmission project in South Asia, successfully enhanced the electricity exchange capacity between China and Pakistan.
Significantly boosted the development of the regional electricity market and accelerated the utilization of clean energy in both countries and the broader South Asian region.
Made a contribution to improving local power supply quality, reducing power losses, and minimizing environmental impacts.
The South Asia High-Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) Transmission Project achieved success not only in terms of technology but also in policy, economic, and social impact. Through cross-border cooperation and technological innovation, the project effectively promoted energy interconnectivity in the region, making a significant contribution to the sustainable development and energy security of the entire South Asian region.
